VAPOUR BARRIER

A membrane used to prevent moisture from penetrating a wall, roof or floor; also a wrap to prevent the escape of condensed water from cold pipes or ducts.


VAPOUR DENSITY

The weight of a vapour or gas compared to the weight of an equal volume of air. Also, an expression of the density of a vapour or gas. Materials lighter than air have vapour densities less than 1.0 (examples: acetylene, methane, helium)


VAPOUR PRESSURE

The pressure exerted by a saturated vapour above its own liquid in a closed container.


VARIATION

Refers to an item that falls outside of the previously agreed upon Scope of Works. i.e. it is an extra or additional item that a separate or additional fee may be paid on top of the previously agreed value.


VAULT

A secure enclosure for the storage of valuables: a large case used for the transport or storage of personal property; an enclosure above or below ground used for the purpose of operating, and maintaining electrical equipment or cable.


VEGETATIVE

Vegetative micro organisms – Microbes that are actively metabolizing, i.e., not in a dormant spore form.


VENEER

A thin sheet of wood that has been sliced, rotary-cut, or sawed from a log, used as a facing material on a less attractive wood; a wall facing of brick or other masonry which provides a decorative, durable surface but is not load-bearing.


VENT

An opening or pipe installed to provide a flow of air to or from an enclosed area or device, such as roof, attic, foundation, plumbing and exhaust vents; to discharge or permit the escape of moisture, vapour or other gas from inside a building.


VENTILATION RATE

The rate at which outside air enters and leaves a building. It is expressed in one of two ways: the number of changes of outside air per unit of time (air exchanges per hour, or _ACH_), or the rate at which a volume of outside air enters.


VINYL FLOORING

A resilient floor covering in sheet or tile form composed of a vinyl plastic binder, mineral fillers, and pigments.
